Internet of Things: Age of Efficiency
Over the last 5 years I can honestly admit that I have had an obsession with new developing technologies and how they impact our world. None, however, have made me more excited than the concept of the "Internet of Things" (IoT). The Internet of things in my opinion will not only radicaly change what kind of world we live in, but our behavior as a society.
You may be asking yourself “WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS”?
The Internet of Things is one global digital nervous system of devices and sensors that can connect devices with each other and with people. The Internet of Things is making every object we interact with intelligent and connected. From smart homes that make our lives safer and more convenient to personal health monitoring devices that make us super human. From connected and autonomous transportation to smart cities that will improve everything about our urban environment.
So why am I so excited about the IoT? Well to put it simply, the IoT is a platform that will allow us to know ourselves and our environment far better than we do now. When we impregnate our tools with sensors they will be able to give us 24/7 feedback on our ourselves. The entire planet will have a nervous system that will allow it to optimize itself and allow us the become a more efficient species.
The 3 areas that the IoT can be divided into are:
Phones and tablets are central hubs in IoT. They give us easy access to each other and to our favorite things. It also allows us to control things like the lighting and temperature in our homes. Its also feeds us information from our wearable devices, such as how much we’ve walked that day or how much sleep we are getting. Our wearable devices will know that if we are dehydrated to remind us to drink fluids, and know if our heart rate or blood pressure is off and recommend us to contact a doctor. Our smart homes will allow our homes to know when we our home and to set the temperature to our preferred setting. It will also know when we walk into a room to start playing our favorite song and will adjust the light to our recommended setting. Smarts homes with smart appliances will run more efficiently and save money on energy consumption and waste.
The era of the Internet of things will definitely have an impact on business. Businesses will be able to track the performance of their products and real time to make improvements and see why their customers are dissatisfied and how to improve. They can also use the IoT to help run their human resource department to make sure their employees are happy and healthy, while also helping them to work more efficiently. IoT also offers the opportunity for new businesses to emerge and bring competition into the market.
Making Our Cities Smart
The population in cities is expected to grow from 3.5 billion in 2010 to 6.2 billion by 2050. Cities will and are becoming bigger and wealthier. But this large population growth will also have major effects on things like energy consumption, transportation, parking, and public safety. Using the power of the IoT to create smart cities will allow us to create a huge nervous system that tells you what is going on in your city in real time. Where are the masses of people? How do people connect? How are resources being allocated? And how and where are things being moved? These are only a few examples of the information that IoT can provide.
The Internet of Things is giving us the opportunity to connect in new ways that were never possible before. It will take us beyond connection and allow us to become part of a living, moving, global nervous system.
“Whether you are an individual, technology developer, or adopter of these technologies, the internet of things will stretch the boundaries of today’s systems. Are you prepared for the changes in how we learn, work, and innovate?”
